26th March 2021

Dear pupils, parents and families of Cathays High School,

I am writing to wish you a restful and happy Easter break and to update you with arrangements for pupils to return after the holidays. It has been a lovely last two weeks of term with pupils back in school. We felt it important to get all students and staff back together prior to our two weeks off and I am glad we have. It has been wonderful to see pupils so happy to be back with each other and with my colleagues, who provide such great support and teaching.

Returning after Easter:

All pupils will return to school on Monday 12th April. We will be following the usual, in-school timetable and we will be starting on Week 1.

The day will start for all pupils at 8.25am. We will continue the staggered finishing times in the Summer Term. These are:

Years 7 & 8- 2.55pm

Years 9 & 10- 3.05pm

Years 11, 12 & 13- 3.10pm

Uniform:

All students in years 7 to 11 will need to wear their normal school uniform from 12h April. We have been very impressed with high standards of uniform in these last two weeks, despite the challenges of being able to buy new shoes or school shirts and trousers for your children who have had growth spurts over the last three months.

I would be very grateful for everyone’s support in ensuring we maintain this high standard after Easter when there will be more availability of school clothing in supermarkets. If this is a source of concern for any families then please do contact your child’s Head of Year or the Inclusion and Wellbeing Leaders (emails at the end). We will do our best to support you with this.

Face-coverings:

Following the most up-to-date Welsh Government and Cardiff Council guidance pupils will be required to wear face coverings in lessons where they are unable to maintain a one- metre distance. This is likely to be most lessons at Cathays High, as it is in almost all other schools. Pupils are able to use the washable, reusable, cloth face-coverings they were given at the start of the year or the medical grade IIR face masks which are blue on the outside.

Students who have already made us aware of medical exemptions will continue to be exempt from wearing a mask and we will already hold this information for them. Should your child have become medically exempt over the holidays, or if they are a new arrival to the school with a medical exemption, then please let the Inclusion and Wellbeing team know so that we are aware of this information.

Risk-reducing measures:

Since returning to school two weeks ago, almost all students have been exemplary in following the risk reduction measures we have put in place. They have been exceptionally mature and I am very proud of their responses to the pandemic, whilst in school. Cathays High School will continue to implement the risk reduction measures after the holidays. Therefore, students will continue to follow the one-way system around the school building, we will still have zones in the yard at break and lunch and pupils will continue to be taught in bubbles to limit the numbers of pupils who have to isolate in the event of a positive test result.

Free-school meals and school lunches:

Cardiff Council has stated that families that have been receiving free school meal vouchers during lockdown will continue to do so until the end of the Easter holidays.

Following our return after Easter, Cardiff Council’s catering facilities will be re-opening on-site. Therefore, pupils and families will be able to top-up lunch money on the Parent Pay system as in the Autumn Term. Children may continue to bring a packed lunch to school if they would prefer.

Children in receipt of Free School Meals will not have the vouchers sent home but will return to the usual system of this being put on their Parent Pay account as was the case before Christmas.

ESOL, GCSE, AS & A2 Assessments:

We have now been able to create an assessments calendar for each year group undertaking ESOL, GCSEs, AS and/ or A2 qualifications this Summer Term, and you can access it by clicking here. It will also be emailed to all students in Years 10-13 and put on the school website. The assessments will be used to generate some of the evidence that the school will use to base the Centre-Determined Grades on. Other things that teachers will consider will be classwork over the previous one or two years of the course and performance in ongoing assessments. These Centre-Determined Grades will be uploaded to the WJEC examination board who will give final confirmation of the individual grades in each subject for each student.

Teachers will be sharing a list of the topics that will be covered in the assessments, and will carry revision and practice activities with their classes. Many of these activities were started over these two weeks prior to the holidays. If you are worried about your child’s stress levels or wellbeing then please contact you’re their Head of Year or the Inclusion and Wellbeing Leader Team so that we can support them as much as possible. We want to ensure that we award Centre-Determined Grades fairly to each student.

I will update you as soon as possible if there are any further developments. Please contact the school if you require any further information. https://www.cathays.cardiff.sch.uk/home

Yours faithfully

Stuart Davies
