20/10/2020

Dear Parents & Carers,

I am writing to you to update you following the Welsh Government’s announcement yesterday of the “circuit-breaker” lockdown for a period of just over two weeks. The lockdown is due to begin at 6pm on Friday 23rd October and end on Monday 9th November.

This has some implications for the attendance of your children at Cathays High School which I will outline here.

Half-term

The last day of this half-term is Friday 23rd October. We then have our half-term holiday from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October.

During this time teachers will not be setting daily, remote learning tasks for students. Some teachers will have set homework or revision tasks and these should be completed by students over the half-term.

Week beginning Monday 2nd November 2020

Inset Days:

Monday 2nd November and Tuesday 3rd November are already planned Inset Days and these will go ahead as expected. This means that no pupils should be in school and teachers will not be providing remote learning activities on these days.

Wednesday 4th, Thursday 5th and Friday 6th November 2020:

On these days, only years 7 & 8 should attend school in line with the Welsh Government announcement. Pupils in years 7 & 8 will receive their usual lessons from teachers. Therefore, all students in years 7 & 8 can and should attend school.

Pupils in years 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 will need to stay home on these days and will receive remote learning activities in accordance with the home learning timetable (included at the end of this letter).

Students in years 10, 11, 12 & 13 are being prioritised for live sessions by some of their teachers on those dates. We will be asking students to complete the good conduct agreement for live lessons in school this week. It has to be completed before students will be allowed to join live lessons. I am including a link to the student agreement here in case they are absent from school, they can complete it at home.

We also ask that parents take a few minutes to read and agree the parent agreement for live lessons and include the link for parents here. This is to ensure that you are aware of the good conduct required for your child to participate in live sessions with their teachers.

Students in years 11, 12 & 13 doing re-sit GCSE examinations in English Language, Mathematics and Numeracy Monday 2nd to Friday 6th November:

There are a number of students in years 11 to 13 who have been entered for re-sit examinations in one or more of English Language, Mathematics or Numeracy. These will go ahead as planned.

Therefore, those students are permitted to be onsite for the duration of the exams only and will leave site immediately after the examinations have been completed.

Before we finish for half-term, we will be ensuring that students who are entered for the examinations are aware of when they are due to be in school during the week beginning 2nd November 2020.

If you are in any doubt then please contact Mrs. Harrington on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or the exams office on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will confirm when your son or daughter should be in school for their examination.

Week beginning Monday 9th November 2020

All pupils from all year groups can and should attend school from Monday 9th November and will receive lessons from their teachers.

I apologise for the length of this communication. I am sure you can appreciate that this is a complicated process and requires us to share things in some detail. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions about the week after the half-term holiday, the examinations or the live sessions agreements.

I would like to thank all parents for their support of the school, and their children’s learning, during this period of uncertainty and challenge that we have all faced since returning in September. It is greatly appreciated. I hope you are all able to enjoy a restful half-term. Stay safe!

Yours faithfully

Stuart Davies

(Acting Headteacher)
